Week 5 North Caley League roundup

Posted on Saturday, September 18th, 2021

It was another exciting day in The North Caledonian season 2021/22 with lots of goals again with 21 in 5 games.

In the first match of the day, Nairn County 'A' travelled north to Couper Park, Helmsdale to take on Orkney who travelled south. It was Nairn County 'A' who took the lead in 8 minutes through Logan Hallam and went into the break 1-0 up. Early in the second half, Nairn doubled their lead in the 50th minute from Kyle MacDonald. Two minutes later Orkney were back in the game through Andrew Mulraine however 5 minutes later Nairn restored their two-goal cushion from another goal from Kyle MacDonald. Orkney hit back again in the 62nd minute from Liam Delday and with twelve minutes left levelled at 3-3 from a second of the match from Andrew Mulraine. With it all to play for going into the last 10 minutes Nairn County 'A' were awarded a penalty and Seamus McConaghy scored to secure the three points for Nairn County 'A' and move them on to six points and fourth in the league table.

Final score - Orkney 3 v Nairn County 'A' 4

In the first of the 2 p.m kick-offs at Alness, both teams looked well matched and went into the break level at 0-0, however, just two minutes into the second half Vikings striker Marc MacGregor followed up his hattrick against Bonar Bridge with the opening goal at Alness. Vikings extended their lead just after the hour mark through Luke Manson and cemented the three points from winger Cameron Montgomery with 5 minutes remaining giving Stevie Reid a much needed three points after a disappointing start to the league season. Vikings move to three points and eight in the table.

Final score - Alness United 0 v Thurso 3

League leaders Loch Ness went into their away fixture at Recreation Park, Invergordon in good form having won at Thurso and Ardersier. The only goal of the game was a talking point as Cammy Mackintosh's header hit the bar and bounced down on the line. The ref awarded the goal and that was the only goal of the game securing the three points for the home side who move on to six points in 3rd place in the league table.

Full-time score - Invergordon 1 v Loch Ness 0

Inverness Athletic made the trip north to face St.Duthus at Grant Park, Tain looking for a win after a disappointing start to the season. However, Saints took an early lead in the sixth minute through a header from their top scorer Ben Bruce from a cross from the left. Ten minutes later Athletic striker Luke Mackay levelled the match only for Saints to strike again in the 24th minute through Jake Lockett and a trialist to extend their lead to two. With three minutes left into the first half Athletic were back into the match thanks to Thomas Lewis who continued his early form taking his season's total to four goals. Half-time score - St.Duthus 3 v Inverness Athletic 2

The second half was a stalemate after five goals scored in the first half until injury time when Ben Bruce scored his second goal of the game and seal the three points for Saints.

Final score - St.Duthus 4 v Inverness Athletic 2

Finally in the last of the 2 p.m kick-offs, Halkirk United took the lead from a free-kick from Andy Mackay which missed everyone in the box and sailed high into the net. In the 33rd minute another free-kick, this time from in form Jonah Martens who hit a curling free-kick over the wall and into the top left-hand corner leaving the Bonar keeper with no chance, with The Anglers going in with a two-goal lead, it was a struggle for Bonar to get back into the game. There were no further goals but with Halkirk always on the front foot they were always looking dangerous and in the 71st minute it was Jonah Martens who picked up the ball on the left and slotted the ball in at the far post and end the match as a contest. With six minutes remaining James Mackintosh tapped home from close range to give Halkirk all three points and to the top of the table as Loch Ness were defeated at Invergordon.

Final score - Halkirk United 4 v Bonar Bridge 0
